The Word in the Wood #16

Posted on 19th October, 2019
Our U15 girls are really leading the club on the pitch just now and produced a thumping 0-4 result at Herts Girls today to go top of their division. In Swain, they have one of the League's most prolific and in-form strikers, and she helped herself to another four beautiful goals, taking her season total to a bewildering 18 in just 7 games! This is striking at its highest level and we are very glad she signed that 35 year contract with us now!
To perform to this level, a player needs constant supply from her team-mates and today, huge credit goes to Hopwood, Cansdale & Murray in particular, who all enjoyed excellent games, as did Embleton, securing PoM with a typically proficient display.
The perfect performance was rounded off with yet another clean sheet, showing the team's mean defence is continuing to keep 'em out! The girls enjoy a well earned rest next weekend before facing Cup action the week after.

After booting last week's horrid little bug into touch, our U9 Girls roared back into action today, scoring two little beauties against Welywn Pegasus. Wood dynamo Lois capped a lung-busting display with two super finishes, gaining PoM in the process. Lois led by example and showed all her team-mates, and in fact, all players at the club, that above all else, when you play football, you've got to put a shift in!

Today's scheduled opposition for our U16 Girls' pulled out earlier in the week and they'll now kick off their League campaign next weekend, away against Bishops Stortford. The girls have been placed in Division 1 and the season won't be easy, however, playing better teams and players ultimately improves you, so, win, lose or draw, we know the girls will give it their all, as they've always done. You just can't ask for any more.

U9 Boys carried on their excellent form with another great performance today. Manager Bruce was thrilled with the boys' attitude and technical play as they thumped in another four lovely goals against Turnstyles. Luis and Bailey both found the net with fantastic strikes that whistled through the air and top-scorer Dragos helped himself to another two, capping a remarkable display and MoM performance.

After being promoted into the Green Division at the start of the season, our U11 Boys are acclimatising to the increased physical and technical demands of the higher standard as well as the nous and savviness of their opponents. It's a big challenge for the boys but, given time and hard work, they'll get there. Today, a fine corner from Callum was converted expertly by Henry at the back post, making him top scorer for the team thus far. MoM went to Luke, who kept going throughout and was challenging, tackling and looking to find a team-mate whenever he had the ball.

U16 Boys faced tough opposition in the League Cup, showing resolve and fight before going out to Harvesters South.
