The Word in the Wood #18

Posted on 2nd November, 2019
Both the U9 and U15 girls braved the foul weather today. As far as the Wood's Amazonians are concerned, it's just warm rain, and the howling wind, well that's no worse than a small hair-dryer!

Our U9s travelled far away to Bury Rangers and performed very commendably again. The girls welcomed another new team mate today, with Lottie making her debut and performing excellently throughout. Maestro Lois bagged yet another super goal, cutting the net to shreds with a blistering shot, while PoM went to the exciting Lola, improving immeasurably with every game. The girls are growing in confidence and with squad numbers swelling, this is most definitely a team to keep your eye on.

Our U15s were up against it from the start in the League Cup against a hot Watford Hornets side, the Wood missing several key players through half term and injury. Despite this, the girls gave it everything, with just 9 in the starting line-up holding out for 20 minutes in a genuine monsoon. Thereafter, we lost another player to sickness and the only viable solution was to abandon the game. Everyone at the club is very proud of the girls and their coaches, who could have stayed warm and dry in bed but, instead chose to have a go. We all know you get out, what you put in, so don't be surprised if the team's attitude reaps major rewards at the end of the season.

The temperature outside was cool, but, our U11 boys were as hot as volcanic magma as they tore on to the pitch against Whetstone Jaguars today. Ably led by Captain Bentley, the boys worked very hard from the off, with all the squad enjoying strong performances. In attack, Henry superbly pulled the ball out the sky and in to the path of the onrushing Daniel, who finished smartly into the bottom left hand corner, his first Wood goal. Second half saw debutant Ben launch a javelin throw which was tucked away coolly by Kai, who cleverly found space at the back post. In goal and defence, the boys displayed much improved positioning and focus, restricting the opposition to pot shots and half chances. At the heart of this, showing a tigerish, tenacious desire to succeed, was Ben, securing MoM on a vintage day to remember.

U9 Boys have been in irresistible form of late, scoring an incredible, perfect 10 goals last week against AC Finchley West. This week they took on a handy Omonia Green side but, the boys just keep pouring it on, scoring another half dozen splendid goals. Dragos and Audley grabbed a goal each, both drilling home from acute angles, while Luis put on a virtuoso performance, hammering in four goals with finishing of the highest standard, and earning himself MoM in the process. The boys are buzzing and must be pushing for a promotion place soon!

To complete a perfect day for the boys' section, our U16s dispatched Whetstone Leopards 1-2, to move into the next round of the Challenge Cup. Langham and Tillcock bagged the goals, with the former receiving MoM after a spirited display. The team has been working very hard and improving each week, thus are thoroughly deserving of this excellent result. Well done you boys!!
