25/26 - The Word in the Wood #16

Posted on 11th January, 2026

The weather has taken its toll again with our U11 & U16 Girls' games called off, while the U18 Boys' opposition were unable to attend due to illness.

Our U15 girls had a very tough away day today vs league leaders Ruislip Rangers; a hard game on a normal weekend but after a 7 week break with no training and Ruislip having two games under their belts, it was going to be a tough ask!

The game started and Ruislip hit us whilst cold and were soon 2-0 up and cruising with our girls not knowing whether they were coming or going. We’re made of tough stuff though and started to fight back and get a foothold in the game.

We had a plan to help us stop Ruislip with our two fullbacks being very brave and pushing up into midfield and our No10 Aanya playing really high and trying to snuff out the excellent Ruislip No8; it started to work and the girls started to control the game and stop Ruislip getting forward. We went in 2 down but with new belief that our game plan was working and we were in the ascendancy.

The message was keep doing the same and next goal was key and we needed it. Well, two mins later we were 3 down and our best laid plans were on fire but, the girls kept on and G9 got on the scoresheet with a fine solo effort to make it 3-1. 5 minutes later our No10 Aanya made it 3-2 with a fine burst from midfield beating a tackle and shooting under the despairing GK. Game on and we were fighting for every ball and blade of grass!

The girls where immense and fully deserved to claw their way back, however, fitness was to be our Achilles heel though and we just ran out of puff today; Ruislip ran away with the game in the last 15 minutes to come away 6-2 winners. A real shame and not what a fine 65 minutes of good performance deserved but, that’s football.

We started on the back foot today with Maisie missing through illness. Lola was not 100% either but to her great credit, attended and put in a big shift, as did Elsie, suffering a knock but playing through the pain barrier! Unfortunately for the team and for star CB Poppy S, we received bad news confirming a humerus fracture. This was very unfortunate but, knowing how strong and determined Pop’s is, we know she’ll be back soon and wish her all the best during her recovery.
