25/26 - The Word in the Wood #30

Posted on 26th April, 2026

U18 Boys faced another older side in Watford Stags today, the game played on an excellent new astro facility in Bushey.

The Wood raced into a lead with the in-form McGuinness racing on to the ball to deliver a cool finish for 0-1. At this point there only looked like one winner but, things quickly turned and the Wood conceded two goals out of nothing to enter half time 2-1 down.

Second half was even more of a struggle as so many of the squad were unable to pass the ball simply and often tied themselves up in knots instead. Stags romped to 6 with Carlow pulling one back with a classy curler into the right hand top corner.

We didn't learn anything new today as the performance was typical of the squad. A lack of character, fight and courage always results in a hammering and though it hurts to say it, most the boys hid, were not ready to stand up and be counted and were intimidated by their older and louder opponent. MoM went to McGuinness who enjoyed a fine match, closely pushed by Manning who was prepared to get stuck in and played strongly as a result.
