The Word in the Wood #13

Posted on 28th September, 2019

On Match Day 4 and after a perfect start to the season, our U15 Girls came up against an experienced and gifted Harvesters side. After the mid-week, late night celebrations at Meadow Park with Arsenal Women, the girls were understandably just a little jaded and the opposition took advantage to secure a comfortable victory. The consistently excellent Manning and Embleton jointly securing PoM. After playing last season at Div 3, the girls are still 5th out of 26 teams in the U15 pre-season league and punching way above their previous weight. We are very proud of them and don't bet against them getting back to winning ways next week against Garston Pumas in the cup.

U9 Girls continued their excellent scoring form against Meninas. Some of the team made it to Arsenal in the week - despite it being way past their bed-time! - and, clearly inspired by what she saw, young Hazel banged in a tremendous goal to keep her recent good form going, securing PoM in the process too. At the other end, Emily got out the bricks and mortar, building an impenetrable wall to frustrate the Meninas attacks second half; a fantastic effort from her. The club was also delighted to see débutante Lois make such a brilliant start to her football career at the Wood. This is a star in the making and she enjoyed a fantastic match. To see the team progressing so quickly and to think they hadn't kicked a ball until a few months back, makes us very proud of them all.

In WFL action, U11 Boys were in excellent form against tricky opposition from Alexandra Park. The team scored two tremendous goals with midfield duo Alfie and Luke supplying precision passes for both Henry and Riley to finish quite sumptuously. At the other end, in a rare sharing of the MoM award, Bentley and Daniel enjoyed very solid games putting in faultless defensive displays. Interviewed after the game by Sky Sports, team coach Marcus was quoted "as being delighted with the boys attitude and desire" before quickly heading home for a rather large roast dinner or two!

U9 Boys were watched at training by your blog author earlier in the week, massively impressing with their enthusiasm and no shortage of excellent technical skills too. Manager Bruce is forming an excellent side and it was no surprise to learn the boys secured yet another brace of goals against Hinton & Finchley. Wood stalwart Dragos was in top form again, twice finishing team moves with aplomb. However, MoM this week went to Leo, whose game is constantly improving and who provided a wonderful performance for the team.

Our U16 Boys were unlucky not to secure their first result of the season against second placed HMH Galaxy. The boys worked hard and scored an excellent goal with the marauding Ogidih skinning his opponent before lashing across goal. Uncertainty from the opposition keeper was well anticipated by the on-rushing Tillcock, who blasted the ball into the net. The next two weeks see them face Croxley Green away and home and expect the lads to starting picking up points soon as they continue to improve.
