The Word in the Wood #17

Posted on 26th October, 2019
The Wood's U9 Girls roared into action today in the rubber match against Welwyn Pegasus. In the words of manager Dave, who was almost deliriously happy, "the girls turned up with fire in their bellies determined to show the true 2000 spirit!"
The side made numerous goalscoring chances with twinkle-toed Lois banging in her 4th of the season and speedster Kara grabbing her season's 2nd, with a stunning pile-driver from distance. To complete the perfect performance, our defence restricted opportunities for the talented opposition attack with PoM secured by Emily, who was a rock in defence and then a springboard in attack. What a wonderful day's footie!!

Our table-topping U15 Girls had a fixture-less weekend so instead took the opportunity to complete warm weather training in Dubai, we think?! This left the U16 Girls to wrap up the day's action, far away at Bishops Stortford. The team worked their socks off despite losing players to injury, leaving them with just 10 on the pitch the entire second half. They never gave up though, made everyone really proud and were it not for a couple of spectacular long strikes from the opposition, their efforts would have deservedly secured a result. Wood veteran Fordham enjoyed an excellent performance, running ceaselessly and wearing a good inch off her studs in the process. No surprise then to see her deservedly named PoM. Thereafter, mum Jenny went ballistic with happiness, seemingly at the great performance of her daughter, before a sharp eyed individual in the crowd saw she was watching England's Rugby World Cup victory on her phone!!!

U11 Boys showed good form in the opening and closing phases of their match against Hadley Rangers at The Hive. In the shadow of the Barnet FC stadium, the boys fought well for long periods but, were unable to find the net on this occasion. Callum picked up MoM with a spirited and vocal performance.

In White Division action, our U16 Boys put on an excellent performance at St. Albans City East, narrowly missing out on the draw in an action packed 3-2 reverse. Da-Silva & Mokonnen provided fine finishes for the team's goals, with Blunt putting on a clinic during a MoM display.
