22/23 - The Word in the Wood #3

Posted on 2nd October, 2022
Our U13 Boys have made a perfect start to the season and hosted Whetstone Tigers in the league at Pursley today, knowing they would have to be switched on from the start after two competitive games with their opponents last season.

The Wood started well and set their stool out early; they looked to play the passing game and get stuck into their opponents. Although having the better of the game Smith had to make a great save at 0-0 that seemed a certain goal otherwise. Joyce, Staszewski and Khan started dominating the midfield and it was Staszewski and Khan that combined for the Wood's first goal; after a great run down the left, Staszewski laid the ball back and Khan finished with a great strike to make it 1-0. Whetstone's best players were out wide but Parratt and Mill refused to give them an inch of space and were on them as soon as they got the ball, and passed it well when they did win it.

The second half started and it was much of the same for 2000. Following some good link up play down the right between Sutherland and Rocha, Rocha excelled with some great skill, his cross was cleared to the feet of Staszewski who let fly with a first time strike into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 and wrap up the game for the Wood.

Borehamwood are getting stronger every week and the 3 centre halfs (whether it be any of Gardiner, Hebblethwaite, Stevens or Adom) are looking solid and now adding clean sheets to their game. On this occasion it was wing-back Mill who got man of the match after winning every tackle and not putting a foot wrong all game.

A great start to the new season after promotion, and 3 wins in 3 sees the Wood Army top of the league. Two cup games in the next 2 weeks should give the boys another couple of shots at glory!

U12 Boys performed highly in their league match against AFC Southgate but, were unable to convert any of the many chances they created on this occasion. Southgate's attack were lively and the match ended 4-0, however, the result only told half the story and this Wood side has so much potential which we will see come though as the season plays out. Skinner picked up MoM after a superb individual display.

Incredibly for this early in the season, U14 Boys have no fixtures for two weeks so hosted Wheathamstead from the corresponding West Herts league. The boys reversed a heavy loss from earlier in the year, running out comfortable winners and playing some of their best football yet. The portents are very encouraging.

U12 Girls join our U13 Boys sitting produly atop of their division after a smashing start. This week sadly, Hemel Aces were unable to field a side due to illness but, the girls will be back in action next week away against Goffs Oak.
