22/23 - The Word in the Wood #23

Posted on 26th March, 2023

Our U14 Boys were the only Wood team in action this weekend and they faced Omonia White in the Spring Cup, knowing 3 points were needed to give us a chance of progressing in the competition.

The boys are in fine form and started the match with confidence, competing physically with Omonia and playing some sparkling passing football. Ifeacho & Silva tested the opposition keeper several times from distance, with a Hobbs header also going narrowly wide. However, Marshall was called upon to make a couple of outstanding saves as the teams went in equal at half time.

Second half carried on in the same way with the Wood continuing to play from the back with simple, composed football of the very highest order with McGuinness, Reed and Makamian down the right, and Manning, Hones & Crucefix down the left, ably supported centrally by Mongomery. At the same time, Omonia's only tactic was to launch the ball long but, short term, this paid off as a brace of hopeful punts found their way tamely into the Wood net and effectively ended the match. Long term, and with further training, such balls will be swallowed up easily and dispatched down field; there's no doubt we will get there and patient plays a huge part when developing juniors.

MoM was shared between Makamian, who was very strong in the tackle and efficient on the ball, & Montgomery, who constantly offered to receive possession and linked the play very well as a result. Overall, the boys continue to impress and face Whetstone at Pursley on Wednesday evening looking again to get the result their good play deserves.
